BUT GOD: Worthiness is not “Our” decision nor is it based on “Our” opinions!

I made a decision in July of 2018 at the age of 34 ☺️ I decided to run for the Copperas Cove Independent School District Board of Trustees! ❤️

My decision was a hard one, and it took months of contemplating, prayer and, “What if I win?” Well, I signed the dotted line on my candidate application to be elected by the City of Copperas residents (and some in Killeen, TX). I researched the history and interests of what would become my fellow board members and I immersed myself into more fervent prayer for God to prevail on my behalf. As you read the news bulletin of a year forward in 2019, notice that I won my election to Trustee, Place 2! As surprised as I was; my opponents were the incumbent male and two other male candidates.

As a woman of color and a hard working mom; in the world of male prevalence and obvious demographic imbalance amongst elected officials, I knew the road ahead would be busy but worth it. I also knew God would be with me every step of the way.

Since winning and taking my oath of office in December 2018, I’ve made a point of engaging every leadership opportunity. My primary goal was ensuring I’m a great role model for our students (including my babies) and not just great on paper and counting my blessings! I jumped straight in to attend the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Legislative Conference in February 2019 to learn about the upcoming bills for the 86th Texas Legislative session which began on January 8, 2019. In June 2019, I joined the Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members (TCBSBM) because Im tasked personally to represent EVERY child in Texas including children of color!

I have to stop right here and tell you that these great people have been a blessing for sure. You just know immediately when God has placed you in the life of people who have your best interests at heart and who never hesitate to mentor you. Can I just say how honored I am to have been apart of the board when Copperas Cove ISD Board of Trustees were chosen by a Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) committee as the 2019 Region 12 School Board of the Year! 🙌🏾

Additionally, I’ve represented the district (a special thanks to my board for the votes) in September 2019 as the primary delegate at the 2019 Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Delegate Assemby before heading to Washington, DC to advocate for Impact Aid (which replaces revenue lost due to the presence of nontaxable Federal property).

I would encourage ANYONE wanting to run for office to put fear aside (read my previous blog here) and pursue the, “desires of your heart” with Godly perseverance ❤️ I made it a point to further my education long before I was elected. I graduated with my Certified Public Manager professional designation rhis past December 2020 and of course my district were strong supporters of my career outside of the district! I couldn’t be more blessed!

My journey is far from over and I’ve got greater plans ahead. I’m typing this from my seat at the leadership training hosted by the Center for Reform of School Systems (CRSS) in Houston, TX as a tribute to the journey God has placed me on, because I have zero doubts about how I got here! Testimonies are worth a thousand prayers 🔥

Thanks for reading my thoughts 💭 #electedofficial #schoolboardmember #prayerispowerful
